The Power of Asking for Help
In a world that often equates strength with self-reliance, asking for help can feel like a radical act. Many of us have been conditioned to believe that if we can't figure it out alone, we’re somehow falling short. But the truth is, every great leader, innovator, and changemaker has sought guidance along the way. No one succeeds in a vacuum—and mentoring is proof of the transformative power of connection.
At Hbird Consulting, we know that asking for help isn’t just about solving a problem—it’s about unlocking potential. It’s about saying, I’m ready to grow, to learn, to expand beyond my limits. This belief in the power of support and shared wisdom is woven into everything we do.
A Personal Journey: Finding Strength in Asking for Help
If I am being honest, most of my life I wasn’t good at asking for help. I was the person who stayed up late figuring things out on my own, convinced that seeking guidance would make me appear less competent, or worse, needy. I carried the weight of hyper independence, feeling that I had to have all the answers before stepping into the room.
But then, during a particularly challenging time, a mentor changed my perspective. She didn’t give me a magic solution or even tell me what to do. Instead, she asked questions that helped me see the situation from a new angle. She encouraged me to trust my instincts while offering her wisdom as a guide.
And there is another, less talked about side of the story. People want to feel wanted and needed. We often feel we should be strong, and not needy and always show up for others. What we are missing is that our relationships are two way streets and those that care about you want to help! It makes them feel valued to offer their expertise or support so you are giving them a much needed gift, not being 'too much'! This often shows up in male/female relationships where as women we keep giving, hoping that the return will just come to us. The problem is when we are too independent, there is a perception we dont need anything. And unless we are brave enough to ask, it appears that's true!
So now my experience taught me that asking for help isn’t about admitting weakness; it’s about embracing humility and collaboration. It’s about opening ourselves to perspectives that can illuminate a path we hadn’t considered, and cultivating win win relationships that are authentic and supportive for all parties. .
Why Mentoring Matters
Mentoring is the bridge between where we are and where we want to go. It’s the kind of support that doesn’t just hand us the answers but helps us discover them for ourselves. For women, leaders, and those navigating life transitions, mentorship is often the lifeline that provides clarity, confidence, and community.
At Hbird, we celebrate National Mentoring Month because we see the ripple effect of mentorship every day. Whether it’s guiding a someone starting their own business, helping a leader build sustainable practices, or coaching someone through a career pivot, mentorship is about empowerment. It’s about saying: You don’t have to do this alone.
